The person who is responsible for how the site looks and “feels.” The Web Designer handles the entire aesthetic and navigational creation of a Web site.

A web designer is also responsible for ensuring that the graphics are clear, the links are working and the navigation on the site is intuitive. Normally, a web designer is responsible for the creative aspects of a website, rather than the programming, however a knowledge of web programming is necessary.

This term refers to the “second generation” of services that are available on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 applications include blogs, podcasts, ppc marketing, wikis, tagging and RSS syndication. Web 2.0 is a rather large category of services that share some basic themes:

• Users can own the data on the site and modify it at their convenience

• The use of “social networking”

August 22, 2007 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment

Kelly at WAHM Talk Radio blog tagged me earlier this month and I just now found out. Guess I’m slow!

I’m going to add my eight cents anyway, and perhaps I can find someone to tag who hasn’t already been…

  1. I am learning how to make beads with polymer clay
  2. I have flowers hanging upside down in my office closet, drying, so that I can include them in some translucent clay to make a cool bead. I hope.
  3. Nine times out of ten, I can’t roll over in the middle of the night because there is a cat sleeping between my knees. She yells at me when I try to boot her off the bed.

WAHM-

An acronym term for Work at Home Mom. A variation is WAHD (Work at Home Dad). The actual origin of the term is unknown, but it is used on a large scale due to the growing interest of women to stay at home and bring in income at the same time.

Many women wish to have a career and raise their children, instead of working outside the home and placing their children in daycare. WAHMs run their home-based businesses in a variety of fields. Some women focus on telecommuting and freelancing opportunities. Others participate in Multi-Level Marketing programs, e-commerce or auctions.

Getting Past Your Fear Of Money

August 21, 2007 by Michelle Waters · 3 Comments

If you’ve started a business selling physical products online, you probably aren’t thinking that you have a fear of money.

However, you may learn differently the first time someone asks you how much you charge for your item at a trade show — or the first time someone questions the amount you charge.

I’ve heard many women talk about how they struggle to price their products or services fairly — and I have had my share of these battles.

My friend Carrie at Natural Moms Talk Radio shared similar stories on her blog recently in her post about money and the natural mom.

Still, money and personal finance IS an important topic. People who don’t “deal” with their money well are generally less happy than people who are smart with their money. Their lack of attention to good financial savvy causes them much unhappiness. Money is like your teeth - if you don’t take good care of it now and prefer to ignore it, it will come back and cause you a lot of pain and rottenness later! I am even of the opinion that being a good steward of money is one way to show God how thankful we are for his blessings (remember the illustration Jesus spoke about the talents?).

Right on, Carrie! If people are trying to make you feel bad for wanting to earn some money — don’t let them.  You deserve to be paid for the products and services you provide.

Someone once said that money is the root of all evil. Well, this is not true. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Make you have your priorities straight and are treating money as a tool and blessing given to you by God, not as the goal for your life and business.

Make sure that the products  and services you are providing enrich the lives of the people who are buying them, that you are using honest business practices and you’re following the plan God has for your life and business. You’ll then have nothing to fear from those who wish to tear you down.

Virus-

This is one of the terms that is normally familiar to everyone, but very few understands what exactly it means. Most know that viruses are bad and can be damaging to their computer, but that is the extent of the knowledge.

A computer virus is program that multiplies itself on computer systems and incorporates itself into shared programs. Some viruses are harmless pranks, and others can destroy computer files or disable a computer entirely. A key quality of viruses is that they spread quickly, from user to user.

Viruses are most commonly spread through e-mail. Certain viruses use personal e-mail address books to send the damaging programs from computer to computer. To prevent against receiving an unwelcome virus, do not open any e-mail attachments from people that you do not know.

Most, if not all, Internet Service Providers offer some kind of protection from Viruses within the structure of the Internet connection. If you use the Internet frequently, you might also want to invest in an additional Virus scanning program, such as McAffee VirusScan or Norton Anti-Virus.

Although both Macintosh and Windows run computers are subject to viruses, there are a greater number of Windows viruses.

This term was originally coined to describe viral marketing, but the adjective has expanded to refer to any practice that moves a product from person to person.

The ease of passing information on to others with e-mail addresses has made it possible for information, videos and graphics to spread like wildfire through the Internet community. There are viral videos, viral jokes, viral hoaxes, etc.

Article Marketing Tips For Product Sellers

August 18, 2007 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment

Imagine that hundreds of websites across the internet are publishing articles that you’ve written, including a resource box that contains a link back to your site. Thousands of potential customers are clicking the links on those sites and are arriving at your website, ready to purchase your products.

Sounds too good to be true, right? But it’s not. With a smart strategy to avoid duplicate content penalties and giving your competition an edge over you, you can run a successful article marketing campaign.

Follow the tips before for the best results:

  1. Write TWO versions of your article. The first and longest version should contain the meat of your topic. Perhaps you’re writing about the benefits of mothers carrying their babies in a sling for the first six months of the baby’s life. When you’re done, you have 20 benefits and an attention catching headline.
  2. Now it’s time to do some keyword research. Figure out what keywords people use when looking for baby wearing information. Take a look at each of your benefits and find the most popular keywords used to search for information on those topics. For example, if one of your benefits is that being close to mom all the time can help a baby sleep better, research keyword phrases related to baby and sleep.
  3. Add those keywords to the appropriate sections of the article, making sure that you don’t compromise the style and flow of your writing. Human readers should not notice that you’ve added keyword phrases to the article. Add the general baby wearing benefits keyword phrase to the headline of your article.
  4. You should now go ahead and add this article to your website.
  5. Time for the fun part: Write a second version of the article. It should be different from the original version and should contain fewer benefits. For example, you might write it solely for parents of babies who don’t sleep. Include on the the sleep-related benefits. And then write a resource box that links the article back to the main article on your site for more baby wearing benefits.
  6. Research the keyword phrases related to the topic you have chosen. Do not use the phrase that you used in your original article.
  7. Once you have added the phrases to your new article, in a natural manner, you will need to submit this article to search engine directories.
  8. What’s next? Well, you have 20 benefits – so you can write 20 articles, right?

This is an effective way of preventing your site from being carted off to the supplemental index, while making great use of article marketing.

The term URL refers to “Uniform Resource Locater.” This is the technical term for any web address that you’d type into the address bar of your web browser.

Using a URL will take you directly to the website you are looking for. When someone asks for the URL of a website, they want the full address. The basic format of a URL is www.websitename.com, although suffixes like “.net,” “.org,” and “.biz” are growing in popularity and use.

The term URL is either pronounced with each letter said (Yoo Are Ell) or as an acronym (“Ural”).
