Does Your Personality Type Suit Your Business?
January 31, 2008 by Michelle Waters · 2 Comments
Welcome to Episode #20!
Have you ever contemplated starting a product selling business but needed the extra assurance that it’s the right choice for you? Or, if you already have a business, are there some aspects of the job that you really despise?
My guest this week is Kelly McCausey from WAHM Talk Radio and Moms Talk Network and she shares how our different personality types will determine what we like about business, if we should start a business, and where our strengths and weaknesses will lie.
The four personality types Kelly discusses are sanguine, melancholy, choleric and phlegmatic. Each type has it’s own strengths and weaknesses and, with proper evaluation, can help you decide what business to start.
Please remember that you shouldn’t shelve your dreams of owning a business just because of what your personality trait reveals. Rather, you can begin more cautiously or begin a business with a partner whose personality complements yours so the balance of work can be shared and you can both enjoy what you do.

How Do You Find Your Passion in Business?
January 24, 2008 by Michelle Waters · 1 Comment
Welcome to Episode #19!
So many people involved with online marketing will tell you that “finding your passion” makes selling much easier. If you are passionate about your product, that will show through your presentation, making the product “sell itself.”
While it does make sense that you should enjoy what you do, how do you find your passion when it comes to business? If you are “passionate” about a particular hobby, how do you decide if you should turn that into a business?
If you have been following my series this month, you should have decided what niche to serve and done some market research first. My guest this week is Katherine Reschke from www.PassionsThatPay.com and she helps us
with the second part of our plan, which is deciding what product to sell.
Katherine helps us make sense of what “being passionate” in business means. She leads us through the process of determining what gives us joy and meaning in life and she reveals two very important tools that you need to make your business a success.
Wise Words Wednesday: Web Design Process
January 23, 2008 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment
If you are moving your existing website, or starting a new phase of your existing business, please do not shut down operations on the old website.
Check with your new web host and designer to make sure you can build the new website on an IP-based address. This way, while you’re building the new site, you can continue to operate your business through the old site.
Why do I mention this?
I just spoke with a client today who stopped selling products on her old website while waiting for her new site to go live. She has now lost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, that she could have been earning while the new site was being built. Even if your designer tells you that your site will be up and going tomorrow, always expect the unexpected and make sure you have a backup plan in the event that your new site takes longer than expected.
Your best bet is to always keep your existing website up and going until the new site has been completed, tested, any issues worked out and tested again. Only then should you shut down the old site and transfer operations to the new site.

So, with this in mind, I’d like to offer up a gift to you, my loyal blog readers. (Thank you!)
The winner of this contest will receive:

Here is what you need to do to apply:
First, think of the one online physical product seller whom you most admire.

Who would you ask, and what is that question?
Once you have that person and question in your mind, please post here, letting me know who she is and what you would ask her.
How to Find Your Target Market
January 17, 2008 by Michelle Waters · 1 Comment
Welcome to Episode #18!
This week Michelle continues her “Starting Your Online Product Selling Business” series with co-host Stephanie Fish from Buckeye VA. Knowing your target market and where to find those customers is often the difference between success and failure as a product seller.
Michelle recommends choosing a target market (or niche) BEFORE you choose your product, although that advice is the opposite of what some internet marketing circles preach. Rather than just choosing a high-end target market with the hopes of making oodles of money, choose a niche that you have a true interest in serving.
If you have a genuine interest in your target market or past experience with a particular product, your knowledge and willingness to help these customers will become apparent and you will become a trusted figure in your niche, thus increasing your sales. If you just want to make money and don’t care about the customers in your market, that will also become apparent to the customers and you will fight an upwards battle to get sales.
Michelle also reviews some basic market research tips and discusses three ways in which you can find information about your chosen market. Setting up your business with these easy steps will help you become a success!
How To Promote Your Business Without Resorting To The Hard Sell
January 14, 2008 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment
A poster on a forum I frequent asked how she could promote her business without feeling like she was pressuring her prospective customers.
She is not alone. Many WAHMs struggle with selling their products and promoting their businesses. Perhaps it’s because we’ve been taught to not “brag” or insist that others view things as we do.
Whatever the case may be, I think we can promote our businesses and sell our products without hard selling. Here are some ideas:
- Make sure our prospect is already interested in our product. If you’re selling cloth diapers, and the person you talk to is interested in cloth diapers, chances are, she’ll be thrilled to hear what you have to say. You can do this by involving yourself in groups online and offline where people interested in your products congregate.
- If appropriate, use your product publicly. If you’re selling baby slings, wear your baby in your sling. There is a good change people who are interested will approach you for more information. When they do, answer their questions and let them know you sell the slings. Make sure you give them a business card with your website address on it.
- Include your website in the top social bookmarking sites. This will enable people who are interested in your product to find you.
- Create a blog to educate your prospects about your product and industry. Offer to teach classes in person. This will put you at the top of your prospects minds when it comes time for them to buy.

How To Research Your Target Market
January 14, 2008 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment
My friend, The SEO Guy Roy Montero and I put together an audio report last week about researching your target market.
So many work at home moms make the mistake of starting a business without really knowing who they are selling their products to. I saw this happen time and again with my own clients, and so decided to figure out why some WAHMs are successful and some aren’t.
My experience and research over the years has taught me that those people who do their research ahead of time are more successful and make fewer mistakes than those moms who just put up a website and hope people show up.
As a matter of fact, those moms who are most successful started out with a target market in mind first. They knew exactly who they were going to sell to — and then figured out what they were going to sell. (And in most cases, these WAHMs were members of that target market to begin with and already knew many people in the market before they started their businesses.)
So, Roy and I put together this audio report to help you understand how to research and get to know your target market. I’m still in the process of editing it and plan to release the report on Thursday.
So, if you’ll bookmark this post — or subscribe to the Product Seller’s Talk Radio feed, or email notifications, you’ll be among the first to know when I release the report Thursday.
Naturally, I’ll update this post as well.
UPDATE 1/17/2008: My computer, on which this audio file resides, is having issues. I’ll have the report up as soon as I can bring the computer back online. Thank you!
I Was Busy Last Night
January 12, 2008 by Michelle Waters · Leave a Comment
My husband had to work late last night, so I decided to do some early spring cleaning. If you’re reading this post on my site, you’ll see what I was up to — if not, just head over to MichelleWatersOnline.com and you’ll see the new layout.
What was previously a two column layout with a header and footer is now a three column layout with two right side columns. I love this setup for a blog/podcast site because it allows me to put more information and graphics on the side. With enough web 2.0 white space, the extra information doesn’t seem too clutters.
I also shortened the header, so you can see more information without having to scroll.
I think the whole site looks much cleaner than before, and is more up to the standard that I wanted.
So, if you have any thoughts about it, if something isn’t working right on your browser or if you have any ideas, just let me know here. Thank you!

Getting Your Business Started the Right Way

Happy New Year and Welcome to Episode 17!
So many people, especially moms, are intrigued by the idea of working from home. They have great ideas and lots of energy to create their online presence and yet many people fail because they approach working from home or establishing their business in the wrong order.
My guest this week is Stephanie Fish from www.BuckeyeVA.com and she shares her first online experience with owning a candle business. She began with a website but because she had little online experience and no one to teach her how to bring in customers, after one year she shut down her candle business.
For the month of January, we will discuss the right order in which you should approach your online business. Proper planning and preparation will help lead you to success. Michelle will also discuss the importance of the “Ready, Aim, Fire” approach to your business and some mistakes new work at home moms make. She also reveals why hiring a business coach is a great investment.
For Shop Kit Plus clients, listen in to Michelle’s new show at BlogTalkRadio.com This is a monthly show which airs on the first Wednesday of each month at 1pm CST.
