Wise Words Wednesday: Top 3 Reasons For Mom To Work At Home

If you are currently working at home, you probably already have your own very good reasons. Perhaps my list will help you add to yours.Or if you’re new to the home business concept, perhaps this will give you some concrete ideas to go along with what you’re feeling.

Also, these ideas apply whether you’re wanting to start your own product selling business, or work for someone else at home.

So here goes:

1. If you have young children, working at home allows you to continue being their primary caregiver. The first three years of your child’s life are especially important. Even better, no missing those major milestones like the first step and first words. If you are breastfeeding mom, you can nurse your baby while working at the computer. Your toddlers can play at your feet and your preschoolers can help you type. (OK, so mommy’s of preschoolers might want to do some outsourcing…LOL!)

2. Save a boatload of money on childcare. If spending extra time with your children isn’t enough to convince you or your significant other, perhaps saving piles of money is. Childcare for just one kid can cost upwards of $70 per week — even if you don’t use the childcare all day, every day. If you must have some time, then a Mommy’ Day Out program can give you a few hours a couple of days a week and still save you tons of money.

3. You can set your own schedule. Notice, I did not say that you are free from a schedule. I’ve learned over the years that having a schedule is terribly important. But you can schedule around school plays, field trips, doctor’s appointments, etc. Not to mention, it’s just nice to be able to take a day off here and there to enjoy the weather.

I’d love to hear your reasons for staying at home. Just fill out the comment form below.

Watch Out For Minimum Wholesale Order Requirements

A popular baby sling manufacturer appears to be dropping small work at home mom (WAHM) distributors who aren’t selling more than their 10 baby carrier per month minimums.

“I was so disappointed to get this news — especially when they phrased it this way in their letter: ‘In evaluating your sales performance in the last twelve months, your interest in promoting our product line was not apparent,’” said MamaKalena at TheBabyWearer.com forums.

Apparently, sometimes large companies get to the top through the hard work of small-time WAHMs. And then when their product gets popular, they start cutting off those who built them. Why? Selling directly to the public, instead of to wholesalers, nets them the extra money for each sale that they’d otherwise have to share with the wholesaler.

My advice: Check out manufacturers when you’re considering who to partner with. Ask other people who sell the product what their experience is with the company. And find out directly from the company what their minimums are.

These Free WAHM Resources Are Truly Free (No Fine Print!)

Noble, OK (PRWEB) November 13, 2006 — New or fledgling work-at-home-moms now have a new business tool. A recently launched website and mailing list is available at http://www.freewahmstuff.com to offer free resources to WAHMs. At this website home business owners can acquire tools and information they need, even if they don’t have the much of a budget.

Many parents want to work at home so that they can be home with their children. In several instances the single income family does not always have any discretionary income for mom to start her home business. Freewahmstuff.com is a needed resource for new business owners. Often times “free” doesn’t really mean free. Owner Michelle Waters has taken great strides to ensure free is free. She explains, “Our definition of a freebie is this: Stuff you can get without opening your wallet.” In cases where you have to give an email address for the free stuff she recommends, there will always be a way to opt out.

She doesn’t recommend anything that she hasn’t tried herself and found to be helpful and informative. For example she promotes an HTML editor on the mailing list that is free. There is also information on a hand coder that Waters uses frequently. A lot of work-at-home-moms sell products online; packing and shipping material can cut into the profit margin. Freewahmstuff.com also provides resources to find free shipping materials.

Sometimes “free” is simply a ploy to gain free access to a page where you can purchase the item. You won’t find that a Freewahmstuff.com. Their mission is simple: to provide you, as a work at home mom, with free tips, information, software and other resources that will assist you in running your business. No hidden agenda; a worthwhile bookmark for any home business.

Need Affordable Content For Your WAHM Website?

As I’m sure you know, well-written content that meets the needs of your site visitors is the key to increasing your website traffic. If you’re trying to write all of your own content, you’re going to end up chained to your computer. Not exactly the reason you wanted to stay at home with your kids, huh?

You may think that the only way to increase your VRE (internet marketing speak for “virtual real estate”) without a negative impact on your family is to hire writers to create much of your content. If you’re like me, you’ve been told to go to Guru.com or Elance.com and hire someone who is “affordable.” You may have even done this — only to come back with content that isn’t well written or very informative. Perhaps you found someone who does an excellent job of writing — but charges $20 to $40 per hour. Ouch!

So what do you do?

This is where All Mom Content comes into play. All Mom Content is run by my colleagues and mentors Alice Seba and Mila Sidman, both of whom are work at home moms. They saw a need for affordable PLR content, geared towards mom’s searching for information on the Internet.

Here are a few key features of All Mom Content:

  • All Mom Content articles are written by people with a command of the English language.
  • All articles are mom-approved and come from the perspective of the intended target market.
  • Membership is limited in number.
  • 30 articles, 10 product reviews and 10 recipes each month.
  • 30-day, no questions asked, money-back guarantee

Sound like what you’re looking for?

Update: My friend Melissa Ingold and I have put together a new PLR resource just for product sellers: ProductSellersContent.com. Check it out!
