Keeping Your Priorities Straight When Working From Home
March 7, 2008 by Michelle Waters
As work at home moms, we often get so busy taking care of your kids and our customers or clients, that we forget the one most important person in our life — our spouse.
Just think — how many times have you been on the phone with a customer who needed help, your significant other called you and you either ignored the phone, or hit the ignore button on your cellphone?
How many times has your spouse come home from work wanting to talk to you, but you were too busy scrambling to answer emails, pack a few more items to ship out or playing a card game with the kids?
I know I’m guilty of these things. My husband ends up feeling like my business, my kids, my mom or sister and everyone else is in the world is more important than him.
I didn’t really realize I was doing this until I attended a Family Life Conference at my former church tonight. (Just got back from it a few hours ago.)
The teacher, who is a licensed counselor and pastor, pointed out that my husband should be the most important person on this planet to me. And I should be the most important person on the planet to him. (And we should work together to care for the kids.)
Every time I ignore his phone call or tell him to wait a few minutes (or hours!) to talk, I am telling him that he is second best in my life. And this is one of the top things that couples fight about, the counselor said. It is the failure of spouses to choose one another over other people in their lives. And this is one of many things that will lead to a loss of romance and emotional connection in a marriage.
I am going to start right now on working to make my husband number one in my life. So if you’re my client, and you’re on the phone with me, and my husband calls, I’m going to politely excuse myself and take his call. I promise I’ll call you back as soon as I’ve taken care of my Sweetie.
How about you?
